Four lines, four jobs

Most boats lie to a bow line, a stern line and two springs. The plan gives each one its own colour, its own length and its own job, so nothing is a guess when the wind comes up.

Read the guide and its sources
  • Bow line

Holds the bow to the dock ahead.

  • Stern line

Holds the stern to the dock behind.

  • Forward spring

Runs aft from forward: stops the boat surging ahead.

  • Aft spring

Runs forward from aft: stops the boat sliding back.

Fixed docks

When the water moves and the dock does not

A line tied tight to a fixed dock at one water level can hang the boat at another. The Water Level Check shows how much length a line needs across the range you expect, and how long a run keeps it within the give you accept.

Run the Water Level Check

“In an extreme case, water levels between Toledo and Buffalo can differ by more than 10 feet.”
